Amazon (AWS and Amazon Data Services)

Amazon is the Seattle-based online retail and cloud computing company, with about 1,576,000 full-time and part-time employees at the end of 2025. Gov. Josh Shapiro announced in June 2025 that Amazon plans to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania data center campuses, starting with a campus Amazon Data Services owns and is building beside the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Salem Township, Luzerne County, and one at the old Fairless steel works in Falls Township, Bucks County, where Amazon Web Services is the tenant. Amazon has since bought land on Devil's Mountain in Kline Township, Schuylkill County, for a nine-building campus that's under township review, and it has filed county plans for 36 data centers at the Homer City Energy Campus in Indiana County. It was also the planned user of farmland Talen Energy tried to rezone in Anthony Township, Montour County, which the county denied in February 2026, and in 2025 it took over the closed Nautilus bitcoin mine buildings next to its Salem Township campus.

Amazon says its cash capital expenditures rose from $77.7 billion in 2024 to $128.3 billion in 2025, mostly for technology infrastructure, the majority of it supporting Amazon Web Services, along with added capacity for its fulfillment network.
