U.S. Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy is the federal agency in Washington, D.C. that runs national energy programs, including the Loan Programs Office, which lends money to energy projects. In November 2025 that office closed a $1 billion loan to Constellation Energy Generation to help restart the 835 megawatt Three Mile Island Unit 1 reactor in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, now called the Crane Clean Energy Center. The department says the loan came from its Energy Dominance Financing program and that the plant will supply the PJM grid once the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves the restart, and Microsoft has agreed to buy the plant's output for 20 years.

The Loan Programs Office also closed a $1.52 billion loan in September 2024 to restart the 800 megawatt Palisades nuclear plant in Covert Township, Michigan.
