U.S. Department of Commerce
The U.S. Department of Commerce is the federal agency that selected NextEra Energy Resources to build gas-fired power hubs funded through Japan's $550 billion investment commitment under the U.S.-Japan trade deal. One of them, Project South Mon, is a $17 billion, 4.3 gigawatt gas plant planned for an undisclosed site in the Mon Valley region of southwestern Pennsylvania, which the department says could serve up to 3.5 gigawatts of demand from large electricity users. NextEra says the U.S. and Japan would own the projects while NextEra develops, builds and operates them, and the parties released an initial $3.3 billion for the Texas and Pennsylvania projects in August 2026.
The department's March 2026 fact sheet also lists GE Vernova Hitachi small modular reactors in Tennessee and Alabama (up to $40 billion and 3 gigawatts) and Project Anderson in Texas ($16 billion, up to 5.2 gigawatts of gas generation) among the Japan-funded energy projects.
