Government of Japan
The Government of Japan committed $550 billion of investment in the United States as part of the U.S.-Japan trade agreement, and the projects selected under that commitment include new gas power plants. NextEra says the U.S. and Japan would own South Mon, a 4.3-gigawatt gas plant planned for an undisclosed site in Pennsylvania's Mon Valley region, while NextEra develops, builds and operates it for fees. NextEra, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of Japan signed definitive agreements on August 12, 2026 that released an initial $3.3 billion for South Mon and a Texas project.
The August 2026 agreements cover up to 10 gigawatts of gas-powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania.
